In the past 25 years, the number of heart attack incidents have significantly increased in India. Experts suggest that people with low or ideal cholesterol levels can also be at risk because of coronary factors such as elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol.

An elevated level of LDL significantly raises the chances of a heart attack because of the build-up of fatty deposits within the walls of arteries. This phenomenon reduces or blocks the blood and oxygen supply to our heart and it eventually leads to heart attack.

Low LDL protects our heart health. We should take note that some cholesterols are even essential for maintaining good health. HDL is such good cholesterol. High HDL and low LDL make our heart healthier. However, studies have found adverse effects of low and extremely low LDL levels.

There are other factors that also increase the risk of heart diseases such as diabetes level and smoking habit. Dr KMK Reddy, P.(?), Professor & HOD, Department of Cardiology, Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, says that the best way to reduce heart risk is through prevention efforts and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
