Women, especially working moms are often too busy to take care of their health and are at increased risk of heart diseases. Indians have a higher risk of heart disease at a young age compared to others. 35% of heart attacks are believed to go unnoticed among women.
Both women and men can be at heart disease risk and heart attack causes nearly one in three deaths in women.
Heart attacks are the leading cause of death among women. Compared to men, women with hypertension and diabetes are at a higher risk of atherosclerosis, a condition in which plaques build up inside arteries. Women are also more likely to have chronic stable angina, a serious heart problem.
Women have smaller coronary vessels than men, which leads to increased heart disease risk and the need for urgent intervention. Women under 50 also have a higher mortality rate after an acute coronary event when compared to men.
Dr PV Siva Prasad, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, says that heart disease symptoms in women go unrecognised because of negligence and lack of awareness.
While juggling professional and personal responsibilities, women often fail to take care of their nutritional needs and stay physically inactive. They often resort to consuming excess fat, carbohydrates and even develop bad habits like smoking. Stress-induced fast lifestyle is making them resort to such unhealthy lifestyle practices. All these significantly aggravate the risk factors that cause heart-related problems.
