Suman Roy

Suman Roy, an accomplished artist, has recently embarked on a new artistic series that focuses on portraying Christ in various ways. Drawing inspiration from the works of his father, Suhas Roy, who is the only Indian artist to have a painting of Christ in the Vatican’s collection, Suman Roy’s exhibition aims to explore the religious and iconic significance of Christ in Indian art. After a significant hiatus from painting, Suman Roy has returned to the art scene with this series, which was recently showcased at the Jehangir Art Gallery, followed by an exhibition in Bangalore. The catalyst for this series was the profound impact the movie “The Passion of the Christ” had on him. The moments of realism depicted in the film influenced him deeply, prompting him to create a visual narrative centered around Christ. The series captures the social and personal challenges faced by Christ during his lifetime, including social unrest, violence, and bloodshed. Through the medium of canvas and acrylic sheets, Suman Roy skillfully translates his emotions onto the artwork. Each piece reflects different aspects of Christ’s monumental and mystical life, depicting his calming and assuring personality.
