Ramchandra Kharatmal

A. Ramachandra Kharatmal, born in 1935 in Attingal, Kerala, is a renowned artist who has made significant contributions to Indian art. He embarked on his artistic journey after completing a degree in Malayalam literature from Kerala University and later pursuing a diploma in fine arts and crafts from Kala Bhavan, Visva University, Santiniketan. Ramachandra’s artistic style is deeply rooted in Indian classical art, with a particular admiration for the works of Nandalal Bose. He skillfully blends archetypal Indian imagery and socio-political symbols with a modernist approach. During his time at Kala Bhavan, he had the privilege of studying under eminent artists like Ramkinkar Baij and Benodebehari Mukherjee, which further shaped his artistic sensibilities. The cultural and intellectual atmosphere of Santiniketan played a pivotal role in Ramachandran’s artistic development. It drew him closer to the rich art traditions of India and other Eastern civilizations. Here, he began his lifelong exploration of the mural painting tradition in Kerala’s temples. Initially, his works showcased an expressionistic style, reflecting the hardships and struggles of urban life, particularly the suffering he witnessed during his visits to Kolkata. However, by the 1980s, his artistic style underwent a significant transformation.
